INJECTION THERAPIES

PROLO THERAPY
Prolotherapy is a nonsurgical procedure that stimulates and enhances the body’s healing process to strengthen and repair injured joints and connective tissue.  Simply put, Protherapy is a treatment used to treat connective tissue injuries like tendons, ligaments that have not healed on their own.  When these connective tissues are stretched or torn, it can destabilize the joint causing pain, laxity and improper moments of the joint.
Due to the fact that these tendons and ligaments have a
poor blood supply, it can take a prolonged period of time
for them to heal, if they heal at all.  Prolotherapy uses natural,
safe, and effective substances to accelerate the body’s own
healing process to repair these connective tissues to strength
and stabilize the body’s joints and movements.
  • Strengthen Tendons & Ligaments

  • Stabilize the Joint

  • Natural Dextrose & Collagen Injection

  • Reduce Injury Reoccurrence

  • Reduce Joint Pain & Stiffness

TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS
Similar to dry needling, we also offer trigger point injections. The procedure starts out the same, only we use a small hypodermic needle instead of the solid acupuncture needle. Then, once we get the muscle to twitch, we inject a small amount of solution directly in to the muscle tissue to nourish the damaged tissue and allow it to recover even faster than dry needling alone.
Many times, coaches or therapists will tell the athlete they need to hydrate to help recover from muscle knots or trigger points. This can be difficult and inefficient to get the fluids and electrolytes to the target area. The advantage of trigger point injections is that we do exactly that! We release the trigger point, and then hydrate the damaged muscle tissue so that it can
heal and recover.
  • Locally Hydrate

  • Fuel Targeted Muscle Repair

  • Natural Vitamin & Electrolyte Injection

  • Speed Tissue Recovery

  • Great for Chronic Muscle Knots

PERINEURAL INJECTIONS

Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) is a proven safe, effective treatment for patients who may not be candidates for joint replacement surgery or biologic options such as stem cell injections or PRP, or for patients who are not wanting surgery and would like to decrease pain and inflammation in areas such as knees, elbows, low back, neck, hands and feet.

Perineural injection therapy treats inflamed and injured nerves.  Chronic nerve pain is often due to trauma, arthritis, sports, overuse, occupational, and surgical injuries.

Any sensation that is perceived by the brain is transmitted to the brain

via the sensory nervous system.  This is true for sensations like pain,

temperature, vibration, or pressure.  For example, when a nerve is

stimulated by pain, the individual nerve cells generate an electrical

current that is carried by the nerve to the spinal cord and then to

the brain.

Imagine the individual nerve cell as being a room with a door (scientifically termed a receptor). When the nerve cell is stimulated, the door (receptor) opens and let sodium, potassium, calcium, and other molecules in and out of the cell such as shown in the illustration below.

When this occurs and moves from one room to the next, an electrical current is created termed an action potential. When the stimulation is complete, the door once again closes. If the nerve is injured for whatever reason, this mechanism is disrupted.

Most patients will require 4-6 Perineural Injection Therapy treatments spaced anywhere for 7-10 days to 2-4 weeks apart depending on their condition. No pain meds or local anesthetics are required.

After the first Perineural Injection Therapy treatment, the pain relief only lasts a few hours and the pain returns. After the second treatment there is about a 25% or so improvement and although the pain returns, it may not be as intense, widespread, or frequent as it was prior to treatment.  As the patient receives further treatments, the pain eventually goes away and normal function returns.

Well over 85% of patients respond positively to PIT.  Patients taking opiate pain medicine tend not to do as well because the opiate competes with the receptor on the cell and can keep dextrose from getting into the cell.

Since this is drug-free treatment, and dextrose is a part of normal human function, side effects are rare except for an occasional small bruises at the site of injection.  Allergic response is not an issue. Although infection is a potential side effect anytime the skin is infiltrated, we have not had any occur in our patient population.

Insurance companies in the States consider the treatment “unproven” although insurers in the remainder of the world routinely cover these treatments.

HOMEOPATHIC INJECTION THERAPIES

The use of homeopathic in injection therapy as an effective way to treat a variety of conditions. This technique involves the injection of homeopathic remedies such as Traumeel or Zeel into specific areas of the body. These all-natural remedies are designed to stimulate natural healing rather than suppressing the symptoms. This evokes a healing response in the body which allows for the resolution of the symptoms. Translated, injection therapy is an effective way to regulate inflammation, reduces pain and increase range of motion in muscles and joints.

Along with the specifically formulated homeopathic remedies, we often will include a small amount of Lidocaine or Procaine (anesthetic) which also has a relaxing effect on the area to be treated.

Other types of homeopathic injections include aesthetic injections to help build collagen, reduce wrinkles, improve skin tone and texture and minimize the appearance of scars.

Homeopathic injection therapy can be helpful for musculoskeletal complaints such as:

  • sprain/sprain

  • tendonitis

  • plantar fasciitis

  • acute or chronic muscle spasms

  • inflammation

  • PAIN: joint pain, neck pain, back pain etc

  • arthritis

THERAPEUTIC B-12

First, we need to be clear about one thing.  B12 does NOT make you lose weight.  In fact, if you are not deficient in B12, it won’t do anything for you.  It is quite common that when people are trying to lose weight, they reduce the amount of calories they are eating and start to exercise more.  This can put the body in a deficient state, especially if the diet is not mostly whole foods from organic sources.  Even when they are, foods today only have a fraction of the nutrients of the foods that our grandparents ate. Despite having produce available all year round, it is still very easy to not get enough nutrients we need to perform at our best.

This is where supplementation and specifically vitamin shots come in.   We can make sure we are getting quality nutrients in to the body for it to use.  It can be a great way to improve energy and keep your fitness goals.

B-12 quality DOES matter. The most popular form of B-12 injection is Cynocobalamin. This is a man-made forma of B-12 and it contains trace amounts of cyanide. We do not recommend this form of B-12. Another form of B-12 called Hydroxocobalamin converts easily in the body and is usually given intravenously as it can be more painful to inject intramuscularly. Hydroxocobalamin usually contains preservatives. Lastly, Methylcobalamin is the most natural form of B-12, the body absorbs and converts it well, and is typically preservative free.

At Point Balance Acupuncture we use high quality B-12 made in a compounding pharmacy in the form of Methylcobalamin which is preservative free.
